Super Mario Kart HUD research

Super Mario Kart game has been first released on 1992 and it’s still goes on till this day. On each different game the HUD and graphics changes a bit. Here is the comparison between each different game:

Super Mario Kart (1992)

This is the first Mario Kart game released. There are two types of HUD in this game: Permanent HUD and Action HUD.
Permanent HUD:
1. The time (shows for how long you’ve been driving)
2. Placement (shows in which place you are going now)
3. Coins (shows how much coins you have collected)
4. The Map (shoes in which place you and other people are)
Action HUD:
1. Signal light (shows when the race starts)
2. The times at the end and placement (shoes how fast you and others finished the race and which place everyone took)
3. Coins ( coins pop up over your head, showing that you’ve collected them )
4. Laps (shows on which lap you are now on)
Resolution
16 bit graphics, pixelated font

Mario Kart 64 (1996)

That’s the second Mario Kart game released. Two different types of HUDs in this game are also Permanent HUD and Action HUD.
Permanent HUD:
1. The Map.
The map has changed after the first Mario Kart game. It became smaller and it now appears in the bottom right corner. It became simple and minimalistic. I think that is a good change because a map doesn’t require too much detail and it’s only purpose is to show the location of each player.
2. The Laps.
Now the laps are always shown on the display’s top left corner. Before there wasn’t shown on which lap you are now, and it showed on which one you are only when you passed the line.
3. Time.
Time is always shown on the display’s top right corner (just like before).
4. Placement.
Now you can see your placement on the left. There are also images of other people’s characters and it lets you know on what place everyone are at that moment.
Action HUD:
1. Signal Light.
Just as before, the signal light comes up before the race starts.
2. Laps.
They left the same action where it shows how many laps there are left after you pass the line.
3. Items.
While playing sometimes item boxes appear, and when you drive on them the item box appears on the top of the screen.
Other changes
Other thing I’ve noticed is that there are is coin collection on the second game.
Resolution
Resolution and graphics has gone better. Now the display is not so pixelated and is more smooth. There is a bigger variety of colours and shadows. The font looks pretty similar to the first one, but it has more colours.

Mario Kart: Super Circuit (2001)

That’s the third game of the Mario Kart. Two displays of this game: Permanent and Action HUDs.
Permanent HUD:
1. Map.
The map remains similar to the previous one and is placed at the same location. However, it looks more pixelated and less smooth.
2. Laps.
They remain at the same place.
3. Time.
The time’s placement hasn’t changed from two previous games and remains the same.
4. Coins.
Coins were removed in the second Mario Kart’s game, but they bring it back at this one. Now they are shown on the top right corner of the screen.
5. Placement.
Placement on the left remains the same, but they added placement above on every players head, so you can know in which place they are.
Action HUD:
1. The Signs.
This is a new feature which shows when you have to take turn.
2. Laps.
As in all versions, a little sign appears that shows on which lamp are you on now when you pass the line.
3. The Signal Lights.
Remains the same like all versions.
4. Items.
Remains the the same like all versions.
Resolution:
The resolution of this new version looks a bit more pixelated and it gives a feeling of an older version. The font is a bit bigger and they changed it’s colours. The display colours look lighter and brighter.

Mario Kart: Double Dash (2003)
66677-Mario_Kart_Double_Dash-6.jpg
That’s the fourth game of Mario Kart.
Permanent HUD:
1. The Map.
It became smoother and more transparent after last version.
2. Placement.
Remains the same, they just removed the placement above players’ characters’ heads.
3. Laps.
They changed it’s place to bottom right corner and made it smaller.
4. Time.
Remains the same, they changed the font and colours.
5. Speedometer (shows how fast you are driving )
That’s a new feature that hasn’t been in previous games before.
Action HUD:
1. The Items.
2. The Signal Lights.
3. Laps.
Resolution:
Everything became smoother and the style of the game is not pixelated. There are even more colours than before. Font has changed a lot: it became bigger, has more colours and effects.
In my opinion there are too much things on the display, and it’s kinda hard to concentrate on one thing.

Mario Kart DS (2005)
Mario Kart Arcade GP (2005)

2. Signal Lights
3. Laps (when you cross the line)

On these versions they removed a Permanent HUD speedometer. Mario Kart DS looks more pixelated than the Mario Kart Arcade GP. There are less things on the display than the previous version. They also disabled the coins.

(Instead of having total time they added lap time too)
4. Your character profile
5. Coins
6. Laps
Action HUDs:
1. Items
2. Signal lights
3. Laps (when you cross the line)
This version has better graphics than previous versions and it’s smoother. There also are a lot more colours

Mario Kart Wii (2008)

Mario Kart Wii was created for the Wii console.
Permanent HUDs:
1. Laps
2. Map
3. Time
4. Placement
Action HUDs:
1. Items
2. Signal lights
There are no coins or character profile image like in the previous version. Graphics look very smooth and there aren’t too much things on the display which I think is a good thing. The colours looks like they are glowing.

Mario Kart 7 (2011)

This version is more dynamic than the previous versions .
Permanent HUDs:
1. Map
2. Laps
3. Coins
4. Placement
Action HUDs:
1. Items
2. Signal light
The graphics looks less smooth and more pixelated than previous game.

Permanent HUDs:
1. Map
2. Laps
3. Placement
4. Character profile
5. Time
Action HUDs:
1. Items
2. Signal lights
This version has the best graphics from all of the versions, it looks smooth and not pixelated, there is also a big variety of colours.

Mario Kart 8 (2014)
screen-01.jpgmario_kart_wii7.jpg

That is the newest version of Mario Kart at the moment.
Permanent HUDs:
1. Laps
2. Map
3. Placement
4. Time
Action HUDs:
1. Items
2. Signal lights
This version has less things on the display and it looks more clean. I think this is the best amount of things on the display because it’s not too much and helps to focus more on the game. Colours in this game look softer. Time font also changed.
